CPA Licensing Requirements in Washington


For Candidates in Washington that have Passed the Uniform CPA Exam

Experience Requirement

Persons who have successfully passed the CPA exam must complete 12 months of work experience (minimum of 2,000 hours) in accounting or a related field such as:

  • Budgeting
  • Internal auditing
  • Financial analysis
  • Tax reporting
  • Accounting for transactions

A licensed CPA must verify work experience.

Ethics Exam Requirements

As of January 1, 2014, all first-time candidates are required to take a course titled, “Washington State Ethics and Regulations for New CPAs.” It covers the Washington State Public Accounting Act in relation to WASBA policies.

Candidates must pass the eight-hour course with a grade of 90 percent or better in order to be eligible for licensure.

Continuing Education Requirements

Licensed CPAs in the State of Washington must complete 120 hours of continuing education every three years (the time frame for license renewal).
