CPA Licensing Requirements in Pennsylvania


For Candidates in Pennsylvania who have Passed the Uniform CPA Exam

Experience Requirement

Applicants for CPA licensure in Pennsylvania must complete at least one year (a minimum of 1,600 hours) of supervised work experience. Experience can be earned in academia, government, industry, or public practice.

All experience must be verified by a licensed CPA and be in one or more of the following service areas:

  • Accounting
  • Attest
  • Taxation
  • Management advisory
  • Financial advisory
  • Consulting
  • Compilation

Education Requirement

License applicants must complete a total of at least 150 semester hours of college courses resulting in at least a bachelor’s degree. This is 30 semester hours beyond what is required to sit for the exam.

These additional hours must include at least 12 semester hours in:

  • Accounting
  • Auditing
  • Taxation

Additional Requirements

  • Applicants can apply for a license on the Pennsylvania State Board of Public Accountancy website
    • There is an initial licensure fee of $65
  • CPA licenses expire every odd numbered year on December 31st
    • There is a $100 renewal fee
    • Licenses can be renewed online

Continuing Professional Education Requirements

The Pennsylvania Board of Public Accountancy has established the following CPE requirements for licensed CPA’s:

  • Completion of 80 CPE hours during the two-year license renewal cycle
    • At least 20 CPE hours must completed each year
    • 16 hours must be in accounting and attest
    • 8 hours must cover tax
    • 4 hours must cover ethics
    • A maximum of 40 total hours can be earned as individual study
