CPA Licensing Requirements in Alaska


For Candidates in Alaska who have Passed the Uniform CPA Exam

Alaska does not confer certificates upon successful completion of the CPA examination. In order to become a licensed CPA, you must fulfill the following requirements:

Experience Requirement

After passing the CPA Exam the following experience requirements must be met before you are able to receive your license:

  • Two years of public accounting under the supervision of a CPA
  • Three years of private or government accounting under the supervision of a CPA

Ethics Exam Requirement

The state of Alaska requires that you pass the AICPA ethics course when initially applying for a license. You must present proof of passing this self-study course when applying for certification. The exam can be requested directly from the American Institute of Certified Public Accounting (AICPA).

Additional Requirements

The following requirements need to be met before a CPA license will be conferred:

  • Payment of an initial $100 license fee
  • Biannual CPA license fee of $290
  • You must keep the Alaska State Board of Public Accountancy updated of any address changes
  • A social security number
    • U.S. citizenship, however, is not required

Continuing Professional Education Requirements

CPA licenses in Alaska are good for two-year cycles and expire on December 31 during odd numbered years.  In order to renew your license, the following Continuing Professional Education (CPE) requirements must be met:

  • At least 80 CPE hours must be completed
    • At least 20 hours must be completed in each year
    • At least 4 hours must cover Alaska statues and regulations, as well as ethics
