CPA Licensing Requirements in The District of Columbia


For Candidates in The District of Columbia who have Passed the Uniform CPA Exam

Experience Requirements
One year full or part-time (not less than 2,000 hours) verified accounting work experience within the three years prior to application. Acceptable experience includes:

  • Accounting services
  • Attest service
  • Management advisory
  • Compliance
  • Tax consultation
  • Financial advisory

Licensing fees requirement

  • Initial license application     $110.00

CPA licenses must be renewed every two years (January 1/December 31).

Continuing Professional Education Requirements
Active CPAs in DC are required to take 80 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) every two years with 40 hours credited for each of the two years.

Four hours must be completed in Ethics.

CPE credits are obtainable through professional societies as well as specific CPE services like “CPE Link,” which offers approved Webinars or courses covering subjects like:

  • Advanced Accounting
  • Auditing
  • Taxation
  • Accounting Technology
  • Finance
  • Ethics
  • Practice Management

Note: There is no ethics examination requirement in Washington D.C.
