CPA Licensing Requirements in Kansas


For Candidates in Kansas who have Passed the Uniform CPA Exam

After passing the CPA exam and ethics exam and paying the $25 application fee, applicants will be issued a CPA certificate, which will allow them to work towards a CPA license.

Experience Requirement

Kansas requires that all applicants for licensure complete a minimum of one full year of accounting experience.

Experience may be acquired through employment in public practice, governmental accounting, private industry, or academia.

Though direct CPA supervision isn’t required, an actively licensed CPA must verify the experience using the certificate of experience form.

Ethics Exam Requirement

The state of Kansas requires that all applicants pass the AICPA ethics course before they may be licensed as a CPA.

Additional Requirements

Applicants must submit a permit to practice application in order to receive their license

  • If applicant’s CPA certificate ends in an odd number and they are applying for a license in an odd numbered year, the fee is $150
  • If applicant’s CPA certificate ends in an even number and they are applying for a license in an even numbered year, the fee is $150
  • Otherwise, the registration fee is $75

CPA licenses in Kansas are renewed online on a biannual basis, at the cost of $157

Continuing Professional Education Requirements

The Kansas Board of Accountancy requires that CPE hours be reported every two years. The following requirements must be met in that time:

  • Completion of at least 80 CPE hours
    • A minimum of two of those hours must be completed in ethics
    • There is no limit on the amount of self-study hours, but they must meet the following requirements:
      • The program is NASBA approved or sponsored by the AICPA
      • Requires registration and includes a final examination
      • A minimum score of 70% is earned on the final exam
      • Applicant provides certificates of completion
