CPA Licensing Requirements in North Dakota


For Candidates in North Dakota who have Passed the Uniform CPA Exam

According to the North Dakota State Board of Accountancy, after CPA candidates have successfully passed the Uniform CPA Examination, they must meet a series of general requirements for CPA licensure, including:

  • Good moral character
  • Provide accounting credential details
  • Pay licensure fee

Work Experience Requirements

Candidates must show proof of at least one year of field-related experience working in government, academia, industry or public accounting. Qualifying experience includes providing advice or service involving the use of:

  • Consulting skills
  • Accounting
  • Tax
  • Attest
  • Financial Advisory
  • Management Advisory

Ethics Course Requirements

All CPA licensure candidates are required to complete the “AICPA’s Comprehensive Course” in professional ethics.

Licensure Application Fee

Candidates must submit an $85 payment upon applying for initial CPA licensure to the North Dakota State Board of Accountancy.

In addition, CPAs are required to pay an $85 annual registration fee following licensure.

Continuing Professional Education Requirements

All CPAs working in North Dakota are required to complete:

  • At least 120 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) credits within the last three reporting periods

AND

  • At least 20 CPE credits annually prior to license renewal

CPAs earn CPE credits by participating in formal education programs that are directly applicable to professional competency.
