CPA Licensing Requirements in the U.S. Virgin Islands


For Candidates in the Virgin Islands who have Passed the Uniform CPA Exam

Experience Requirement

There are two different experience requirements specific to the different education qualification options that candidates can fulfill:

  • Candidates with a non-accounting college degree must complete three full years of accounting experience in public or government accounting
    • This experience must be gained in the fields of auditing or as an internal revenue agent
  • Candidates that have completed a degree with an accounting concentration must complete two full years of accounting experience in public or government accounting
    • This experience must be gained in the fields of auditing or as an internal revenue agent

Education Requirement

  • Earn a bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited college or university

OR

  • Earn at least a bachelor’s degree in business from an accredited college or university and:
    • Complete 30 semester hours in accounting, business law, economics, and finance
      • At least 20 of these hours must be in accounting

The Virgin Islands is the only NASBA jurisdiction that does not require a total of 150 hours for licensure.

Ethics Exam Requirement

Applicants must pass the AICPA ethics exam before they can become licensed.

Additional Requirements

  • CPA license fee – $390
  • Licenses are valid for one year from July 1st to June 30th
    • Applicants must submit a renewal application
    • Applicants must submit a tax clearance letter from the Bureau of Internal Revenue for every renewal cycle
    • CPA annual permit – $25
    • CPA renewal fee – $50

Continuing Professional Education Requirements

The Virgin Islands is one of only two jurisdictions in the United States that does not require CPA’s to meet any CPE goals in order to maintain licensure.
