Becoming a Digital Forensics Expert

The opportunities for those with a degree in computer forensics are vast. It’s possible to work for the police or FBI, or to work for a private company. When a specialist has some time under his or her belt, it’s even possible to freelance and become an independent contractor. The pay is great, and with plentiful job opportunities, it’s no wonder that more people want to travel down this career path. However, you have to make sure that you have the right qualifications and the right education first.

Those who enter this field are meticulous and patient. They understand that much of their work is going to be working with computers rather than people, yet they know that they have to have good interpersonal skills. Because of the nature of the job, it’s also important for them to be able to handle themselves during a trial. Those who have those personality qualifications will also have to go through the appropriate schooling.

Getting a degree through a traditional university or an online school is possible, and there are a number of good schools out there offering these specialized degrees now. It’s important to choose a school that has full accreditation. However, if you want to enter the field of law enforcement, you might want to have even more education. Getting a degree in criminal justice in addition to the degree in computer forensics will be a plus on your side when you are interviewing.

After the degree, most digital forensics experts decide that they should also have certification. The Certified Computer Examiner (CCE) and Certified Computer Forensics Examiner (CCFE) are two of the most popular certifications to have.

Once they have the degrees and certificates they need, the world is wide open in terms of jobs. This is one of the fastest growing job opportunities in the United States and abroad.
